Fatty Acids: Branched-chain
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Branched-chain fatty acids are common constituents of the lipids of bacteria and animals, although they are rarely found in the integral lipids of higher plants. Normally, the fatty acyl chain is saturated and the branch is a methyl-group. However, unsaturated branched-chain fatty acids are found in marine animals, and branches other than methyl may be present in microbial lipids. The most common branched chain fatty acids are mono-methyl-branched, but diand poly-methylbranched fatty acids are also known. Their main function in membranes may be to increase the fluidity of lipids as an alternative to double bonds, which are more liable to oxidation. The following discussion is not intended to be comprehensive.

Branched chain fatty acids with 15 and 17 carbon atoms occur abundantly in the lipids of Bacillus subtilis (natto) (2), in a species of Sarcina (3), in Micrococcus lysodeikticus (4), and in B. subtilis (ATCC 7059) (1). Recently Horning et al. (5) have presented evidence based on purified enzyme preparation from adipose tissue that branched long chain fatty acids are synthesized by condensation ...

S&o (1) has clearly identified the branched chain fatty acids, isopentadecanoic and isoheptadecanoic, in the lipids of Bacillus subtilis (natto). Another branched chain fatty acid, 12-methyltetradecanoic (sarcinic acid), has also been isolated from the lipids of a species of Surcina by Akashi and Saito (2). It is important to note that, these branched chain fatty acids occur in the bacterial li...

متن کامل.\Production of Branched-Chain Fatty Acids from Sterculia Oil1
Methyl sterculate was rearranged by use of 0.5% of rhodium catalyst to isomeric conjugated diene fatty acid methyl esters containing both methyleneand methyl-branched isomers. The rearranged products were hydrogenated directly to saturated, methyl-substituted, branched-chain fatty acid methyl esters with the methyl substituent at one of the positions formerly occupied by the cyclopropenoid ring...
